Dry Needling
Trigger points are localised spots of contracted muscle fibres located within the body of a muscle. In common with more generalised muscle spasm (or cramp), trigger points can give rise to deep aching pain (myofascial pain).
Dry Needling is a technique where very fine sterile acupuncture needles are inserted into trigger points. This has the effect of relaxing the muscle spasm, de-activating the trigger point and reducing myofascial pain.
Research has shown that dry needling is both safe and effective. This is reflected in the 2009 NICE guidelines that recommend dry needling as a useful adjunct in the management of low back pain.
For those who are not keen on needles, we offer deep tissue massage and laser therapy. Both of these approaches are useful in the treatment of myofascial pain.
